THE BIRTH OF THE CARMICHAELS

In the 1820’s a family was separated as one slave owner moved to Alabama while another owner remained in South Carolina. Phoebe and her seven children resettled in Alabama with her owner while Mike’s owner remained in South Carolina.  Mike vowed to his wife, Phoebe, that he would work for his freedom and join them in Alabama – whatever the cost.

Mike worked hard, in the day hours for his master and at night for himself.  After four years, he had earned the money to buy his freedom and to begin his long journey to Alabama to reunite with his family.

Mike and Phoebe had eleven children:

Eliza, Mike, Joseph, James, Fanny, Peter, Isaac, Patty, George, Daniel, and Peggy.

You are a descendant of Mike and Phoebe.
